What is Chess Boxing [Quick Guide]

What is Chess Boxing? its a game created by Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh. The idea of this game is a very clear that you must win mentally and physically at the same time. If you lose one of the fights, you will lose the match.

Chess Boxing’s History

In 2003, Rubingh was inspired by the novel which has the cover photo of chess boxing. The Photo shows a man wearing gloves with chessboard printed on it. The founder’s full name is Iepe B. T. Rubingh.

He was born 1974 in Rotterdam. He is the first champion, and also the current president of the World Chess Boxing Organization.

Rules

This game has 11 rounds. 6 rounds for chess and 5 rounds for boxing. You have to win either in chess or boxing. The time control of each round is 3 minutes. So basically it’s a blitz chess game and each player has 9 minutes without increment.

  • In order to participate in some professional tournaments, you must have the elo of 1600 and 50 amateur bouts fought in boxing.
  • Like boxing, it has weight classes (Lightweight, max 70 kg, Middleweight max 80 kg,  Light heavyweight, max 90kg,  and Heavyweight, max 90+kg).
  • Men or Women must be 17 years old.
  • A match is decided with a knockout, technical knockout, checkmate, Exceeding of the time, by the referee, or resignation.
  • If its draw in chess, the player with higher points in boxing will win, and if it remains to draw in both boxing and chess, then the player who has black chess pieces will win the match.
