Because there was only 2 choices at that time to begin game with one is to play e4 and other is d4.

  • Nimzowitsch was one of the chess players who promoted the idea (Center can be controlled from long distance such as 1.Nf3 controls two main squares in the center). He wrote this idea into  Nimzowitsch’s My System and Chess Praxis.

There are opposing views on Nimzovich and his contribution to chess.
    For example,
GM R. Byrne, a philosophy professor: Nimzo was “perhaps the most brilliant theoretician in the history of the game.”
GM Tal: “My System is a book of generalizations… the value of these generalizations in the process of learning chess is enormous. To put it simply, this is the real theory creation… Until a general principle is formulated, each chess player should rediscover it on their own, wasting time and effort using their intuition. And intuition – I know what I am talking about! – is an uncertain thing, it can fail you…”

    On the other hand,

GM Short suggested that Nimzo should be banned,
GM Spraggett regretted wasting his time with My System,
GM Seirawan repeatedly said that “All Nimzovich ideas are rubbish!”

What is scary, some are for banning thoughts and ideas! Perhaps including books (like My System).

I belong to the former camp and entered a debate with GM Yaz on Nimzo.
